A ring that doesn't fit can't do its job, whether it's a daily wedding band or a special gift. Understanding how ring sizing and resizing work will save you frustration and help ensure your ring is comfortable, secure, and ready to wear. Here's what you need to know.

How to Find Your Ring Size

Ring sizes are measured by the inside diameter of the band and follow a numbered scale. The most accurate way to find your size is to have your finger measured in person with a professional ring sizer. If you're buying a surprise gift, you can borrow a ring the person already wears and have a jeweler match it.

Tips for an Accurate Measurement

  • Measure at the end of the day, when fingers are slightly larger.

  • Avoid measuring when your hands are cold, fingers shrink in the cold.

  • Account for wider bands, which fit more snugly and may need a slightly larger size.

  • Consider your knuckle, the band has to slide over it comfortably.

When Can a Ring Be Resized?

Most rings can be resized up or down by a size or two without trouble. A jeweler resizes a ring by either adding or removing a small section of the band and then seamlessly soldering and polishing it. However, some rings are more challenging, eternity bands set with stones all the way around, tension settings, and rings made of tungsten or certain other hard metals may be difficult or impossible to resize.

How Long Does Resizing Take?

A straightforward resize is often completed within a few days, depending on the metal and the complexity of the setting. Your jeweler can give you an accurate timeline and explain whether your specific ring presents any challenges before any work begins.
